Okay, my last review/rant wasn't really official, so I guess this would be my first review for this site. I feel special. Very Happy

Alright, first off, my gripes, which are few in number but still deserve mention.

To begin, perhaps I was just expecting too much, but since my last Bethesda game was Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, I was expecting a little more in the way of stealth, and I was rather disappointed. Maybe I just didn't get to a high enough Sneak level, but I couldn't sneak up on a goddamn Radroach unless I was using a Stealth Boy. In addition, I am incredibly disappointed that the only stealthy weapon in the game aside from melee weapons, the Silenced 10mm Pistol, was so bloody weak. The combination of these two things almost force a player to blitz his way through the game, concentrate on health, firepower, and damage resistance, and completely ignore the more shadowy paths.

Secondly, the radar. I understand this depends on Perception, but even so, many was the time I'd check my radar before I went into a room, not see a thing, and just waltz right in only to get ambushed by a Feral Ghoul (which is an incredibly terrifying experience; I didn't stop shooting until there were pieces all over the room). In addition, there is almost no way to tell how far an enemy is by checking the radar. I think the red dot is supposed to be small at the extreme range, then grow and solidify as you get closer, but often it wouldn't work out like that. Finally, whenever I would try to recover by sleeping in a bed for an hour in an enemy base, I would get a message saying that I could not sleep with enemies nearby. I would do a complete 360 check, and get nothing on my radar. I would try to sleep again, and I'd get the same message. It's very frustrating to be kept awake by something that isn't there. This thing is so broken, I would only use it to see which way I had to go to get to the marker, and that wasn't often.

Finally (and it's a rather minor thing), I would have liked to see more variety in the radio stations, or at least the music. I understand it's a post-apocalyptic wasteland, but hell, there can't be only one enterprising individual with some access to radio equipment out there.

Alright, with the gripes out of the way, now for the good stuff.

The visuals were beautiful. If Bethesda can do one thing, it's creating a vivid and absolutely stunning environment. Since it's a wasteland, it would have been so easy to just skimp on it and say "What do you want from us? It's a nuclear disaster, for Pete's sake." Instead, they outdid themselves, and for that, I thank and congratulate them.

There was a LOT of attention to detail in the characters, friend and foe alike. I didn't like that in each town, most of the NPCs couldn't engage in dialogue with you, and were just referred to as *blank* Resident, but other than that, I can't complain. The enemies all wanted your blood, and they voiced that quite eloquently. The skin, the clothing, even the facial expressions were all done with exquisite care. The voicework could have used some work; sometimes the words and the tone they were spoken in didn't quite mesh, and the cadence was off at times, but you can't get everything right all the time, and it did the job anyway, so that doesn't really fall so much under "gripe" as it does "meh".

The weapons, my GOD, the weapons. Aside from the aforementioned pistol, I enjoyed the use of each weapon (aside from the Fat Man, which I never actually got a chance to use, for various reasons), especially the custom weapons. The Shishkebab is a melee master's dream, and the Deathclaw Gauntlet is a rather nice reminder of Phantasy Star's Booma Claw (god, I loved that weapon). My only wish would have been for a missile launcher with a homing function. I wasted so many missiles trying to nail Super Mutants, and so often they would just step to the side by inches, and I would completely miss 'em. Which was infuriating. But on the whole, I rather liked the weapons.

The main quest is sufficiently epic for a Bethesda product. I was quite broken up over a few parts, which I will not divulge due to spoilers. I just don't like that once you finish the main quest, you FINISH. There is no continuation, so make sure you leave a save file before you waltz on to the final confrontation. On the whole, it is a great story. As for side quests, they are quite diverting, but can be difficult to come across. If you kill an NPC early on, you can eliminate a LOT of potential for quests and subsequent rewards, so I personally advise that a player restrict his carnage to Feral Ghouls, Raiders, and Super Mutants and such, but hey, you do what you want, right?

On the whole, with all things considered, I would give this game a 9, perhaps even a 9.5 if I'm not being picky. Even though I don't consider this game to be a 10, it's still one of the best games available today, and I'd recommend it to anyone.
